Fast Company, Red Herring and Gizmodo

Global Rainmakers 8/24/2010 1:25 PM
As technological advances continue to move at a pace faster than our imaginations can keep up with, it’s important to really understand the purposes of these advances and the ways in which they will affect our lives. The application of biometrics is a very exciting field that inspires many imaginative reactions from many people. A recent post on Gizmodo.com responded to a piece published by Fast Company about our growing iris technology. This blog post and the informative pieces from Red Herring follow many such thoughtful discussions about the topic happening all over the world today.

A consistent concern about iris recognition technology and its application is privacy. While...

NCS4 Conference - New Orleans

Balancing Safety, Security,  and the Spectator Experience

I attended "Balancing Safety, Security,  and the Spectator Experience", hosted by NCS4 Natinoal Center for Sports Safety & Security in New Orleans  2-4 Aug 2010.

Sport Security Future Panel I partiipated on the panel, "Sport Safety and Security in 2020: What Does Our Future Hold, and How Can We Shape It?" The 6-member panel included

Steve Dennis (DHS S&T/HSARPA) Mitch Erickson (DHS S&T/IAD) Jeff Carter substituting, CDO Global Rainmakers (iris recognition) Keith Halper, CEO  Kuma Games Jim Henry, CEO  Henry Brothers Electronics John Voeller (contractor to DHS S&T/IGD) Our message: “Security is far more than gates, guns and guards and far more than the technologies.  Future security will be integrated with the fan experience and the business of running a venue.  Failure to plan and implement will lead to tragedies that can kill the business—fans simply will stop coming.”  Keynotes Sec. Napolitano spoke, emphasizing the new See Something/Say Something (SS/SS) campaign. DHS is working with Amtrak, shopping malls, sports leagues, NCAA, and others to train employees.  She noted that this is a partnership expanding with individual fans/citizens. "Shared responsibility". Alert citizens can be force multipliers.  Example:  Times square hotdog vendor.  Because of his alert notification it took only 53 h to apprehend a suspect....

Coming Changes, Ready or Not!

Global Rainmakers 8/11/2010 12:00 PM
1. The Post Office. Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, FedEx, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.

2. The Check. Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with checks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business.

3. The Newspaper. The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.

The Black Swan

Global Rainmakers 7/28/2010 8:52 PM
The Black Swan - Jeff Carter

The connected economy roars forward with exponential acceleration, and opportunities emerge on all sides. For example, identity theft-related credit and debit card fraud is the No. 1 fear of Americans, who are in the midst of the global financial crisis . Concern about fraud supersedes that of terrorism, computer and health viruses, and personal safety. The number of U.S. identity fraud victims increased 22 percent in 2009 to 9.9 million adults with the total annual fraud jumping 7 percent to $48 billion .   This is just a fraction of the amount of global fraud from all sources and represents an environment where less that half of the globe is connected.  The potential for escalating disruption geometrically increases as more people join the networked economy.

As fraud and related identity related crime soars, companies are investing aggressively in physical access control and identity solutions. At the same time, in parallel with this massive investment in...

The big switch

Global Rainmakers 7/28/2010 8:05 PM

The Big Switch - Jeff Carter

Nicholas Carr, in his book, The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google, described a disruptive scenario.

A hundred years ago, businesses stopped generating their own power with steam engines and dynamos and plugged into the newly built electric grid. The cheap power pumped out by electric utilities didn’t just change how businesses operate, it set off a chain reaction of economic and social transformations that brought the modern world into existence.  Now, a similar revolution is under way. Hooked up to the Internet’s global computing grid, massive information-processing plants are supplying data and software code into our homes and businesses. This time, it is computing that has turned into a utility.

President Obama’s emphasis on Identity Management needs a unifying element

Global Rainmakers 7/23/2010 10:32 AM
The Obama administration recently announced plans to promote identity management throughout the government. Howard Schmidt, the White House Cyber Coordinator said, "The ability to conduct transactions is key to everything we are doing.” The strategy calls for systems to be locked down and resilient, tested to withstand attacks, interoperable and federated, and most importantly, cost effective and easy to use. Whether a person interacts with the government or businesses over the Internet, a kiosk, an ATM, or a mobile device, the person and transaction must be secure. Success in this bold and noble endeavor requires visualizing solutions through a lens of identity management. We must protect the privacy and civil liberties of all while addressing the holes that exist in our current measures for cyber security, fraud protection, and identity theft.

Identity—the very essence of who we are and how we interact...
